This episode of the Hard Hat Show is about migrant workers in Beijing. It includes interviews and footage of an event at Beijing's Jianwai Soho real esate development where an NGO called Hua Dan, together with UNESCO and the property developers, organized 'Together with Migrants'.
This day long event was intended to both teach and entertain migrant workers and inform the general public about their plight. In this episode of the Hard Hat Show, we speak to migrant workers as well as artists and organizers from the event, and find out what some of the workers think of the Jianwai Soho development and Pan Shiyi, the media figure and tycoon behind it.
This episode was shot by Anna Sophie Loewenberg, Hao Chong and Luke Mines, edited and with interviews by Anna Sophie Loewenberg, presented by Jeremy Goldkorn, with music by Fernando Fidanza. Pan Shiyi was not harmed in the making of this episode.

The last episode of Danwei TV's Hard Hat Show was an interview with the writer Mike Meyer, who is completing a book about his experiences living in the hutong area west of Qianmen. He introduced us to a Chinese writer living in the area, Zhang Jinqi.
Zhang has recently published a book about the history of that area: The Carnal History of The Eight Big Hutongs (?????????, available on Chinese online retailersJoyo.com and Dangdang.com.
This episode is a brief interview with Zhang, where we find out a little more about the area's colorful and bawdy history, and get Zhang's views on restoration of historical sites in China.
Aside from writing boooks, Zhang is also organizing the online archive of historical materials about Chinese buildings and cities at MemoryOfChina.org.

Nan Luoguxiang is one of the oldest hutongs in Beijing and has been a residential neighborhood for hundreds of years. In the last few years, bars, cafés and boutique stores have flourished in the alley way, drawing tourists and Beijing residents in search of low key night life and a taste of old Beijing.
In the last six months, the local government renovated the alley way, destroying temporary structures that some residents had built, cleaning up the facades of the buildings and repaving the alley with grey stones.
Was the renovation successful, or just another example of bad urban planning in Beijing?

Southwest of Qianmen and Tiananmen Square in Beijing is a maze of narrow alleyways stretching from the theater and market street of Dazhalan all the way west to Liulichang, Beijing's antique and traditional Chinese art supplies street.
In the Qing Dynasty, this area was the city's commercial quarter where travelling tradesmen and local commoners who were not allowed to live in the Manchurian City (sometimes called Tartar City in English language accounts) north of Qianmen. It was also the place where Beijing opera really took off, and the area of choice for theaters, tea houses, inns, opium dens and brothels.
As Beijing prepares for the Olympics, this historic quarter's future is uncertain.
This episode of the Hard Hat Show is an interview with American writer Mike Meyer, who is living in the area and writing a book about it, to be published next year by Walker / Bloomsbury. He has been living in a small room in a communal courtyard, volunteer teaching at schools, and getting to know the community. He tells us about the history and future of the neighborhood, and the problem of preserving the area in the face of Beijing's hyperspeed urban development.

This episode of Danwei Music is about Say Bok Gwai (???), San Francisco's first Chinese American hardc*re band.
Say Bok Gwai's original compositions are rooted in American punk/thrash/ hardc*re music but sung primarily in Cantonese. The subject matter of their lyrics ranges from Chinese American identity to grappling with traditional Chinese values. Their music is not for the timid or easily offended.
Frontman Alex Yeung is a long time San Franciscan musician who has worked in both the local rock and experimental music scenes. Alex serves as the songwriter and guitarist for Say Bok Gwai, as well as playing guitar for the instrumental group Fear of Math. Drummer Andre Custodio has been an integral part of the Bay Area experimental music scene for over 10 years and is also part of the experimental trio, Tri-Cornered Tent Show. Say Bok Gwai has released their self-titled debut CD on Monkey King Reccords.
This episode of Danwei Music was shot and edited by Anna Sophie Loewenberg, with music by Say Bok Gwai and the intro tune by Beijing band Reflector.
